Read Fast - How to Read 550 to 1000 Words Per Minute
By Floy Gregg

About to take college entrance exams?
Studies show that 50% of students applying for college need a reading improvement course for:
Improved comprehension
Rapid reading rate/words per minute
Better test taking skills
Enlarged vocabulary
Expanded critical and analytical thinking skills

Silent Reading Fluency
To be the best reader possible a person must read silently and quickly. In fact, silent reading will actually improve comprehension. Saying the words out loud reduces reading rate and comprehension. The tongue can only move about 130 words per minute, which is first grade reading rate, so it is easy to see why it is important to never read aloud.

Read 500 to 1000 Words per Minute
To read at these rates it takes practice, the right equipment and an experienced trainer. Vision training is necessary because this is a subliminal activity. It is a matter of putting in the time to train the eyes to move faster.

For those who do have visual problems, seeing a Behavioral Optometrist (doctor educated to find the reason the eyes are not working to read faster and more easily) is the first step. Afterward a trainer can be found to help with the other skills needed to read faster and with excellent comprehension.

80% or higher Comprehension
Reading fast is not the only goal, high test scores are most important. The goal is to score 80% or higher on tests and keep an average above 80%. This eliminates worry about being on the border line to pass or not. Get effective training in comprehension skills as soon as possible. This can be done at the same time as visual skills training and makes improvement in the reading process quicker and easier.

Words and More Words
College level reading means knowing and understanding more words. Higher levels of vocabulary are absolutely necessary for success. Books or software are available to enlarge vocabulary and a knowledgeable trainer can help students power up analytical vocabulary skills.

How to Think and Reason
Critical reasoning skills are the most important part of testing. There are skills to learn how to take a test. Knowing how to critically read and evaluate test questions can give a leg up on competition. Having these excellent testing skills will eliminate the suffering of test anxiety. Knowing the skills it takes to read, comprehend, analyze and do it all without wasting a minute of the test period is real confidence.

Self-Confidence - What is Your Body Language Saying About You?
By Lovie Hobbs

What is your body language saying about you? Is it sending signals to others around you that you are self-confident, sure of yourself and do not need any ones validation? Conversely, is it saying you have lack of self-confidence, unsure of yourself, and constantly seeking approval of others? Nonverbal communication is power because people usually make an assessment of you before you are given the opportunity to speak. According to the online dictionary Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, gives the following definition for body language:

Body language - is a form of nonverbal communication involving the use of stylized gestures, postures, and physiologic signals which act as cues to other people, humans, unconsciously, send and receive nonverbal signal all the time   Some researchers put the level of nonverbal communication as high as 80 percent of all communication. More reasonably it could be at around 50-65 percent.

You can generally identify a confident person by their body language. One of the hallmark signals we used to show that we are in a defensive mode is when we cross our arms over the chest. It communicates the person is on the defense and possibly is not open to anything that is being said; essentially they have "shut-down." This is a sure signal if they are engaged in a heated discussion. A person seen with crossed arms over the chest and rubbing them indicate they are cold.

It is not difficult to determine whether a person is confident. Usually, they will make prolonged eye contact and have a strong posture. Posture is a good signal to determine a person's self-confidence level. Generally, a confident person has a "pep in their step" when they walk, their shoulders are back and head up and you may even receive a casual smile, a short stare, and a nod of their head from them as they walk. How does a person sit in their chair? Are they slouching in the chair, shoulders drooping and head down. Excluding medical reasons or just being tired this could be another indicator of their self-confidence level.

Have you seen a person sitting with their hands clasped behind their head and sitting back in their char legs extended with their feet crossed on top of their desk. This person in this position could be the "post child" for self-confidence. Their body language is saying, I am extremely comfortable in my skin (self-confident) and I am opened to what is being discussed and I am listening.

Our goal is to be demonstrative of strong body language and display a nonverbal presence that reflects self-confidence. This is extremely important, especially since studies have shown that 55 percent of communication is nonverbal. Verbal communication makes up an extremely small percentage - seven and the remainder is voice ton, speed, pitch, and volume - 38 percent. Remember to act confident even if you are not, if you are nervous take deep breaths and hold them so you can calm down. Try your best to exude confidence. People generally believe a person who appears to know what she/he is talking about whether the person is right or wrong. They tend to believe the person because of strong body language, the eloquence of their speech - "they sound good."

3 Secrets For a More Positive Mind
By Marilyn B. Gordon

Remember Stuart Smalley from Saturday Night Live?  If he said something negative about his life, he'd stop himself and say, "No, that's just stinkin' thinkin'! I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!" This was Stuart's way of shifting his thoughts of low self esteem and personal defeat into feeling okay and even loved. If you ever tend to look at all the possible ways you or your life are no good, you can shift your thoughts into higher levels.

Thought Shifting

So if like Stuart you do a litany of stinkin' thinkin', you can shift your thinking upwards. First you take note of what you're doing. Here's what Stuart once said to himself:

"Oh my God, I said the wrong thing to someone. I'm going to die homeless and penniless, I'm twenty pounds overweight, and no one will ever level me." That's Stuart's negative spin and is not quite the truth. Choose your own negative spin if you have one. You first pay attention to it and look at it from a distance. Stand back as if you're on a mountaintop and take a look. No judgment, just observation.  "What am I attempting to say here?" you might ask yourself. You may be attempting to self destruct or treat yourself less than well. (You can blame it on the devil or the negative thought forces of the world.)

"No that's just stinkin' thinkin' - or something like this to yourself." "I don't need to do this anymore. I'm a being of the universe." Or "I'm fine just the way I am." Or "Maybe I didn't do so well that last time, but I can transform this, and I will."

And you can always remember this: "It is what it is!"

Seeing the Advantage of Everything

If you lose something or regret something else, you can look for the advantage, the other side to all things. Maybe you hurt your leg, but perhaps this keeps you from having to do some work you really didn't want to do. Maybe you lost something, but you're learning to be non-attached. Or maybe you're being opened up to a new life. Perhaps you're being prepared for something higher or more expansive. Maybe you're learning the importance of spiritual values. Perhaps something has worn out its usefulness or relevance in your life, but you haven't yet acknowledged it, and now you can. Learning to see the advantage of everything is a major life transforming habit of mind.

Connecting with Your Wisdom

Your Wise Mind has a fresh perspective on life. When you ask it what it would like to tell you about something, it will tell you the truth. A young eleven year old girl was afraid to go to sleep because she could only think of bad people who might try to harm her. She allowed herself to feel her fear, and then she asked her Wise Mind to tell her more:" It's okay. You used to feel this way when you were a younger child, but now you can grow up some more and think thoughts of being safe." Anyone can do this, young and old - connect with the Wise Mind, for fresh perspective and for truth.

What We Think is What We Get
By Andre Niel

I recall not liking potatoes as a child. I would be forced to sit at the table for as long as it took to get them down, and that usually took hours; until they were cold and dry and really difficult to swallow. I call this "Potato Conditioning."

Today, I love potatoes! In all shapes and sizes, mashed or baked, with or without filling. So what changed? How did I go from a mulish potato resistor to a potato aficionado? Clearly, I acquired the taste for it, somehow. Yet I don't recall exactly how that happened. I am not the only one who has walked the potato gauntlet; practically everyone I know can relate with some vegetable or another.

This kind of transition has occurred in me with issues more serious than potatoes. There was a time when I had some very unsavoury ideas about people who were not my race, or my religion, who didn't speak my language, and who wore "strange" clothing and haircuts. Thankfully, these beliefs have crumbled under the tide of experience. I have come to understand what it means to love people, and not what they wear, or their race, or what they believe.

When I consider that the concept related above is not new, and that everyone understands it in principle, then I can't help wondering why we still live in a world with borders and boundaries, restrictions and judgements. It is not as pervasive as it was fifty years ago, no doubt, and that leads to the conclusion that to some extent, societies can replace dogma and prejudice with tolerance and understanding - or at least a willingness to try to understand differences in others. So why do we do this with some things and not with everything. Once we see the pattern in one aspect of society, why do we continue to ignore it in other aspects?

Coming to terms with another religion, accepting that there exist other beliefs, deciding to embrace another human being, regardless of their social standing, apparent intelligence, race or sexual orientation - these are all examples of potato conditioning. At some level we all understand that nothing is absolute, and to cast something as absolute makes our world smaller. Yet we persist regardless.

Our societies are boxed in by absolutes. Absolute law, rules, regulations, absolutely wrong, absolutely right, absolutely black, absolutely white - everything is based on one persons absolute or another's, because in the dance of life fear will not allow anything less. If we are not absolute, then we may not be completely right, and there is no room for half measures; our credibility, safety and security depends on that. One absolute and irrefutable truth, however, is that no matter how safe and secure we feel, we are never truly safe and secure. This great illusion is also as old as time, yet it is the one that we find most elusive.

At times we see the contradiction of our dogmas staring back at us; they rear their ugly heads and shout at us. In the words of Sir Winston Churchill; "(We) stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up and scurry off as if nothing happened." Many people don't have the courage to embrace what they don't understand, and that is where they miss the point completely. Fear boxes them in to the extent that they barricade life out. They see only what they are allowed to see given their safe position, and for this safety they will fight bitterly. This is what so often leads to vehement clashes and determination by some to impose their own apodictic versions of "the absolute truth" on others.

Ironically, by fighting what we fear we unwittingly draw more of it to us. To understand this I only have to remember my potato days. In my heart of hearts I have a profound awareness that everything is good and that, as with potatoes, I can find good in anything if I can rally the courage to swallow my fear, to lower my guard and look for it. Only then will I see all of life; taste it in all its fullness. Let us not reject life until it becomes cold and dry, and difficult to swallow.

Review the Latest Movies With a DVD Organizer
By Maxim Smirnov

If a career in writing movie reviews is something that you think might be a good fit, it's time to start looking at the movies you have. But the truth is that you probably already have plenty of DVDs and movies to practice with - if only they were organized. With a DVD organizer, you will be able to not only arrange your DVDs in a manner that makes sense for your reviewing goals, but that will also allow you to keep up with the latest trends in movies and in other types of productions. A great reviewer reviews as much as they can, and getting organized is the first step to a great career.

You Have to Watch Movies to Know Movies

It just makes sense that when you want to review movies, you need to watch movies. But if you're like any film buff, chances are high that your DVD collection is getting out of hand. Though DVDs are cheap, they can begin to take up space after a while - and you can begin to forget what you own. With a DVD organizer or DVD organizer software, you will be able to easily sort your DVDs into genres, directors, or other subcategories. In doing so, you will be able to see what movies you have that you love and which ones you have that you do not love. You want to have a good balance between these two types of movies since reviews aren't already written on the movies that are well done.

Polishing Your Writing Style

Once you have your DVD organizer in place and your collection under control, it's time to learn how to write a movie review. This process starts by reading as many movie reviews as you can - New York Times, Washington Post, etc. Read all of the online movie reviews you can as well so that you get a sense of what other authors are doing and how you might be able to write in your own unique way. From this research, you should begin to craft your own reviews, seeing how witty you can be and what you can bring up about each movie as you watch it. Like any movie reviewer, it might be a good idea to practice by writing several movie reviews each and every week, allowing you to begin to create a portfolio of reviews and plenty of practice under your belt.

Getting Published Now

Though there seem to be many a movie reviewer around, you might be able to get those movie reviews you've written published by starting your own website or talking to local publications. Let them know what you are reviewing, and whether you can be available to write reviews on a more regular basis. Send a few samples of your work in, letting the publication know that you haven't been published yet, but you are willing to work hard to become a vital part of their publication. All that said, you might want to look for publications which do not already have a movie reviewer on staff as you can already be guaranteed that you're not going to be competing with anyone for their job, though you will be adding to your DVD organizer as you gain experience.

Try Self Hypnosis For Self Improvement
By Keira Adams

Among the best techniques to connect with your inner being, to get a sense of your real power and promise, and to enrich yourself is to participate in self hypnosis. It doesn't cost you anything to try self hypnosis, it can be done in the convenience of your own house and anybody can do it if they become familiar with the proper procedures.

If you don't have any idea how to learn self hypnosis, don't worry. We live in the era of information. There are a lot of methods to be found online, many of which you can easily teach yourself. It's not complicated to do in any way. As a matter of fact, people participate in this practice in a number of ways without even being aware of it, so there's truly no absolutely correct way to go about it.

The very first stage is choosing a calm location to start. You have to get as comfy as you can. Some people prefer to lie under their blankets, undressed or wearing loose clothing, with their head on a pillow. Some prefer a favorite chair to recline in, others select the couch and yet others like to be seated with legs crossed on the floor. It's neither here nor there what position you adopt, just get as comfortable as possible. The intent is to find a place and a pose where you are able to stay utterly still for up to 20 minutes or more without experiencing discomfort or muscle pain.

Just as each individual has a preferred way of becoming restful, they also have their favorite techniques for placing themselves in a calm state. The most typical way is to breathe deeply while not thinking about anything at all. That's why you will need to have absolute silence. You don't need to listen to traffic noise outside, your kids' screams or even a barking dog that will bring you out of your calm state of being. Many people listen to soothing music, some prefer to hear wind chimes and some wear headsets that suppress all sound. No matter what it takes, you need to become utterly tranquil and bring yourself ever more deeply into a subconscious state.

Once you're in a hypnotic trance, you will need to focus on the stuff you're trying to improve. See yourself achieving whatever your aspirations and goals are, or visualize yourself becoming the person you have always wanted to be. Again, there's no improper way to go about it. Your inner being understands what needs to be improved, your system is aware of how to repair itself and your psyche, your subconscious mind, is aware of what it takes to be victorious. As long as you're peaceful, and free of all conscious thought, you've succeeded. Do it regularly enough and you'll quickly see yourself developing into a better person and more in sync with who you really are and who you want to be.

Learning self hypnosis techniques provides you with a powerful tool that you can use to overcome a wide range of problems in your life. And it's easier than you might think. Find out more at Learn Hypnosis.

Ignoring the Need For Willpower
By Ross Hudgens

I have had great success recently losing weight. Besides knowing the fundamentals of nutrition, a huge, huge part of losing weight is willpower. That means the restraint to prevent grabbing that extra donut or going to Carl's Jr after a night of drinking or late night snacking when you really didn't need it.

On the average willpower scale, I would bet I am somewhere around average. I don't binge frequently, but I have trouble resisting a soda or a late-night meal when my body is calling for it. However, my success has nothing to do with my power of restraint: rather, it comes from making restraint a non-issue.

To prevent these binges from getting the best of me, I take precautions to make sure they never show their smiling face. Often when I'm at home, I want a snack, a little something to nibble on. Or maybe I need some caffeine pretty tough. So I do what most people would - I go to the fridge/cupboard, and look for food.

There's never anything there.

When I want food or I want anything but I've concluded I don't need it, I put blocking measures in place to make sure they can't be reached. I have minimal food in my cupboards, food that I would never, ever crave for, but I can use if I need it for sustainability/muscle growth. If I want food, I go out. I have a grocery store right next to me, and also a Subway. I frequent these for my healthy-food needs, and If I'm going out to the bars or a party one night, I leave my ATM/Credit Cards at home, making sure that even if I want to late-night binge, I have no funds to do so.

Having to overcome bouts of laziness to drive to the grocery store or back home to pick up my ATM card keeps me from eating in excess, making weight loss more like a foregone conclusion and less like a challenge.
This doesn't only apply to losing weight - you can do this to save money, make sure you do something, whatever. If you want to make sure you get a great workout, have your friend drop you at the gym. You'll have no choice but to run home, even if you feel like crap and want to abbreviate your workout. If you need to study for a long time, plan pickups and dropoffs so that you must spend the full 4-5 hours at the library or Starbucks or whatever you find most comfortable.

Basically, set standards, watermarks, whatever, to ensure that despite the wussiness and the psychological deficiencies of your own brain, you manage to do it, no matter what. Once you get over the hill past the initial craving, you will start to adapt to missing it and it will make future cravings less frequent, and when they happen, easier to get over. After that, everything is easier and simpler to accomplish.

Ross runs a Self-Improvement Blog at phiROSSophy.com. For more information on willpower, motivation, and self-improvement, check out his writings there.

Control Your Life by Controlling Your Mind
By Mark Piecha

There comes a time in each of our lives when we realize that the only thing that we really have any control over is our own mind. And, therein lies the mystery to controlling ones experience. It may seem a bit ethereal, but by controlling your mind, you can dramatically affect your total life experience.

The vast majority of our experience in life is directly related to the thoughts that we habitually entertain. How can this be? How can our thoughts actually affect our experience?

Well, this happens in a few different ways. The first way is that you will act in accordance to those thoughts. For example, if you believe that you are no good at something, then you will subconsciously make yourself do things that prove that you are no good at that "something".

Conversely, if you believe that you are good at something, then you will subconsciously make yourself do things that prove that you are good at that "something".

Please keep in mind that most of this happens, as just noted, on a subconscious (or, unconscious, if you will) level. This means that you are probably not even aware of it taking place. This is all the "stuff" that you have in your mind that you don't even remember going in. And, we will discuss this more in a future article.

Another way that you do this is by seeing things as happening a certain way; your perceptions, or interpretations of what your life experience is. In other words, in appears to you to be a certain way; while someone else with different "programming" will perceive it to be in line with their dominant thoughts.

We could say that this could be likened to making lemonade out of lemons. When one person may see a failure or a mistake, another person will see that it was a lesson-something to be learned from and utilized in their life. This is perspective. This is your own personal take on things. And it, as we're discovering, has a lot to do with how your personal experience on a physical level goes.

The third way that your mind is helping to create your reality is by attraction. When your predominant thoughts are negative, you attract negative experiences and people into your life. Again, this is happening unconsciously, so you're probably not even aware of it. But, it's happening all the time.

What can you do to alter your life experience in a more positive manner? Well, you can begin by becoming aware of these things happening. And...

You can also begin to use affirmations to help "re-program" your mind to accept positive experiences more readily.

Affirmations, like the power of the subconscious mind, are a topic for a future article; but there is plenty of information available right now, if you're willing to do the research.

Mark Piecha is a student and practioner of success principles. Through personal study, application, experimentation and collaborating with experts in the field of self-improvement and personal development, he has created a unique and refreshing way of sharing this knowledge.
